Post-Surgery Care: Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Post-Surgery Care: Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Dr. Srikanth Gadiyaram, a GI surgeon specializing in complex gastrointestinal surgeries, emphasizes the significance of post-operative care. Adherence to post-operative instructions is crucial for successful recovery after gallbladder surgery, pancreatic surgery, or other gastrointestinal procedures.

Recovery Tips from Dr. Srikanth Gadiyaram

  1. Comply with the Instructions of Your Surgeon
  2. Oral intake: You will not be allowed to take orally for 4 hours in a short-stay surgery and for a day or two after major operations. Once the oral intake is initiated keep yourself well hydrated
  3. Dealing with Pain: You will be kept pain-free in recovery.
For short-stay surgeries, injectable painkillers are generally needed for less than 24 hours. For major surgeries, an epidural catheter placed by the anesthesiologist during surgery helps deliver pain medication as an infusion for the first 48 to 72 hours. Later, you will be prescribed appropriate oral pain medications. Follow instructions and inform your healthcare team if the pain becomes unmanageable.
  4. Monitoring for Complications: For short-stay surgeries, close monitoring of vital parameters is generally required for several hours post-surgery, and ICU stays are usually not required. However, in major operations, ICU monitoring may be necessary for a day or two. The surgical team closely observes the patient to recognize and address complications early.
  5. Returning to Activity Gradually: Rest is essential post-surgery, as is gradually resuming normal activities. The surgeon will provide instructions regarding the resumption of daily tasks and more strenuous activities. Respiratory exercises, such as incentive spirometry, help prevent infections, and early mobilization prevents deep vein thrombosis in the lower limbs. For instance, following cholecystectomy or gallbladder surgery, light walking is recommended to enhance circulation and minimize the risk of blood clots, whereas heavy lifting should be avoided for a few weeks.
  6. Adhere to a Nutritious Diet: Diet is important for recovery. In a short stay you will be started on liquids for 4 hours of surgery and graduated to a soft diet within 24 hours.
In Major surgery, oral intake may be started in a day or two after surgery and intake is escalated based on gut recovery.
  7. Regular Follow-Ups: Regular postoperative appointments with the surgeon are important for monitoring your recovery progress. Surgeon visits evaluate healing progress, address complications, and adjust care plans.
  8. Psychological Well-Being: Surgery often poses mental and emotional challenges. Establish a support system with family, friends, or professional counselling. A positive attitude and stress management can aid in recovery.
