Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is a condition that involves the inflammation or infection of small pouches known as diverticula that develop in the colon’s walls.

Although many individuals with diverticulosis may not experience symptoms, diverticulitis can arise when these pouches become inflamed or infected. This can result in severe abdominal pain and other complications.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of diverticulitis include a wide range of severity and typically encompass:

  1. Abdominal pain is typically intense and focused on the lower left side of the abdomen.
  2. Fever
  3. Abdominal discomfort accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
  4. Alterations in bowel habits can manifest as either constipation or diarrhoea.
  5. Abdominal bloating is characterized by a sensation of fullness and distension in the stomach.

Treatment

Depending on how severe the diverticulitis is, several treatments may be necessary.

  1. Antibiotics are commonly used to treat infections effectively.
  2. Temporary adoption of a liquid or low-fibre diet is recommended to facilitate the healing process of the colon.
  3. Effective pain relief can be achieved through the use of over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen.

Surgical Intervention

The vast majority of patients with Diverticulitis can be managed medically, says, Dr.Srikanth Gadiyaram, Senior consultant: Surgical Gastroenterologist at Sahasra Hospitals, Jayanagar.

However, patients may require surgery for the following reasons he explained.

○     Recurrent Episodes: Numerous acute diverticulitis that significantly impacts one’s quality of life.

○     Possible complications may arise, such as the development of abscesses, perforation, fistulas, or obstructions.

○     Inadequacy of Medical Intervention: Continuation of symptoms despite conservative therapy.

Types of Surgical Procedures

The following are operations that are generally performed in patients with Diverticulitis.

The Dr.Srikanth performs most of these operations laparoscopically. (Minimally invasive Surgery, thus, avoiding morbidity associated with open abdominal surgery).

  1. Primary Resection and Anastomosis:

○     Indication: Stable patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis.

○     Procedure: Removal of the diseased segment of the colon and reconnection of the healthy ends.

  • Hartmann’s Procedure:

○     Indication: Acute complicated diverticulitis, especially with perforation or peritonitis.

○     Procedure: Removal of the diseased part of the colon, creation of a colostomy (bringing the end of the colon to the abdominal wall), and closure of the rectal stump.

Complications of Surgery

Infection, Anastomotic Leak, Bowel Obstruction & Fistula Formation are potential complications which are seen in less than 10% of patients.

Long-term Outlook

●     After undergoing surgery, numerous patients report a substantial enhancement in their quality of life. Implementing lifestyle changes such as a diet rich in fibre, consistent physical activity, and refraining from smoking can effectively reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Regular follow-ups and colonoscopies as recommended by the healthcare provider are important for surveillance purposes.

Patients with diverticulitis can benefit from surgical surgery in the management of complications and repeated episodes. The patient’s health, the seriousness of their illness, and the potential outcomes dictate the type of surgery that is carried out.

Using latest minimally invasive surgical techniques & state of the art technology, our surgical team at Sahasra Hospital achieves successful outcomes.
